DUBUQUE LOCATION’S PATRUM RECEIVES APRIL ABOVE & BEYOND AWARD

Whether he’s behind the wheel of a delivery truck or behind the counter of the Dubuque Spahn & Rose location, Inside Sales Representative Jim Patrum shares his positive, can-do attitude with customers and coworkers every day, especially as Spahn & Rose continues to contend with the changing business practices engendered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Whenever something needs done, Jim will step up; he’s our utility guy and always comes in with a good attitude,” says Josh Mozena, Assistant General Manager at the Dubuque Spahn & Rose. “He’s my go-to guy to bounce ideas off—he has a wealth of knowledge and has been in the building-materials and construction industry almost 40 years.”

In recent months, the Spahn & Rose Dubuque location has done double duty as a distribution center to supply four other lumberyards, and Patrum has stepped up to take on additional responsibilities, including making deliveries and helping in the yard.

“Whenever I ask Jim about the extra steps he’s putting in, pulling orders and placing product outside for pickup, he’s always happy that he can come to work with what’s going on, and is willing to do whatever it takes,” says Dubuque Spahn & Rose General Manager John Cook.

Patrum’s work ethic and willingness to tackle whatever job needs to be done led to his receiving the April Above & Beyond Award—but he’s very modest about his own hard work.

“I have a good support team that allows me to drive, work the yard or go behind the counter, wherever’s needed,” says Patrum, who began working at Spahn & Rose in March 2016.

Working the counter at the Dubuque location, Patrum is on the front lines serving customers while dealing with the in-store COVID-19 adjustments. And he’s helped keep customers safe since day one.

“When news about the virus first came out, I was skeptical,” Mozena recalls. “I brushed it off, but Jim told me I wasn’t taking it seriously enough. That was a real eye-opener. Jim has taken this very seriously and does everything he can to keep employees and customers safe. He’s been a real rock throughout all this.”

When he’s not working, Patrum enjoys spending time with his two grandsons and twin granddaughters.

As a recipient of the Above & Beyond Award, Patrum will also receive a $100 Visa gift card and is eligible to be named the company’s Employee of the Year.

Spahn & Rose employees can be nominated for the monthly Above & Beyond Award by coworkers, supervisors and customers. When a customer submits a review, any employees mentioned are nominated for the honor.
