EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: JENNIFER SEXTON, DUNN LUMBER LOCATION

We sat down with Jennifer Sexton, a cabinetry designer from our Dunn Lumber location for a casual interview about her design process. Get to know Jennifer more here….

What is your favorite thing about your job?

“As much as I enjoy the design process, client presentation meetings, and creating a space that incorporates all of my customers wants and needs and more, my favorite part about my job is seeing the final installed project and seeing that I helped make my customers dream space become their reality. I also love that every day is different and I get the opportunity to work on projects that range from a smaller single story unique cottage remodel project to two story with a basement new construction project. You really don’t know what you next day or next week is going to look like because you don’t know who is going to be walking into the store and what their project consists on.”

What is your favorite display at your location and why?
“My favorite display at my location is a new kitchen we just put in. This display utilizes two cabinet lines, Dura Supreme and countryside. The perimeter of the kitchen is Countryside while the Hood and the Island is Dura Supreme. I love that this kitchen uses so many key design features such as: contrasting colors from island and hood to perimeter, the heritage finish from Dura Supreme, the newly added Shiplap hood,  a shiplap island back panel, two different types of island “x” panels, two different wall cabinet configurations being the 2/3 split door and the stack cabinet, the walk in pantry cabinet, two types of corner cabinets, and many more interior accessories available within the cabinet lines that we labeled encouraging customers to see what the lines we carry have to offer that they might not think about otherwise.”

What is a fun fact about yourself?
“A fun fact: outside of work and the office, I am a very outdoorsy person. Just from looking at me a person probably would guess that I spend my free time riding horses, riding four-wheelers/snowmobiles, going on long walks in the preserves with my dog, snowboarding, spending a day out on the lake, and most of the year when weather allows ending the night sitting around a bonfire with friends and family.”

What has been your favorite project you have designed?
“My favorite project I have designed this far would be a recent Dura Supreme kitchen using the previous curated color collection “Slate tile” paint. We took down a wall separating my homeowners living room and kitchen to create an open concept living space and put in a great big island that didn’t have a raised seating overhang, but instead had a lowered seating overhang area. And Because she was limited on wall space we needed to be creative and custom make the inside of her pantry cabinet to accommodate her cooking and storage needs.”

What is your best advice to someone looking at remodeling their kitchen or bath?
“My best advice to someone looking to remodel their kitchen or bath would be to not overthink their decision. I often see homeowners second guessing their decision on for example, a cabinet color. Almost always they end up going with their initial gut feeling. I also would recommend taking a look at what the current trends are and photos other kitchens/baths for inspiration prior to the initial meeting. When homeowners do not take a look at what is out there and what is possible, it might get overwhelming coming into the meeting having to pick  door styles, finishes, and wood species when there are SO many options sitting right in front of you.”
