Jean Nolin’s official title at the Newton, Iowa, Spahn & Rose location is Inside Sales Representative. Just about every day, though, she wears many hats. She’ll work the front counter, stock shelves and do the store’s bookkeeping.
A three-decade veteran of the lumber and hardware industry who has been with Spahn & Rose since 2012, Nolin affirms her belief that the business is built on service. “You have to listen to what the customers’ needs are,” she says. “My favorite thing about my job is working with the customers, and I do my best to help them.”
Recently, one shopper thanked Nolin for her outstanding service with this online review: “Last week I came to your lumberyard to purchase boards to repair my garage. Your employee Jean was so helpful and knowledgeable about what I needed. Great customer service and a reason to shop local!”
Thanks to that review, Nolin was nominated for—and received—the June Above & Beyond Award, a monthly honor that recognizes outstanding Spahn & Rose employees.
“She’s not afraid to tackle any job, especially anything to do with learning computer programs,” says Rick Shutts, General Manager of the Newton Spahn & Rose. “With contractors, she always follows through. She’s all about service after the sale. She’s just outstanding.”
When Nolin isn’t wearing her many hats at Newton’s Spahn & Rose store, she likes spending time with her family and volunteers at her church as a bookkeeper.
Nolin and other recipients of the monthly Above & Beyond Award receive a $100 Visa gift card and are eligible to be named the company’s Employee of the Year, which includes a $1,000 prize.
Spahn & Rose employees can be nominated for the monthly Above & Beyond Award by coworkers, supervisors and, like Nolin, by customers. When a customer submits a review, any employees mentioned are nominated for the honor. Customers can also nominate employees for Above & Beyond through Spahn & Rose’s social-media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
