Look, Listen and Learn during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13

Every year, Fire Prevention Week is a vital, lifesaving reminder about how to prevent fires and ways to escape a burning building. This year, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) asks Americans to Look, Listen and Learn during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13.

An essential part of Fire Prevention Week is checking and installing smoke detectors. Throughout Iowa, northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin, Spahn & Rose locations offer a variety of smoke and carbon dioxide detectors ideal for contractors and do-it-yourselfers.

Local fire departments will be sharing Fire Prevention Week information. And this year, the NFPA urges Americans to:

LOOK for places fires could start, such as near cooking or heating areas, and identify potential fire hazards such as electrical equipment, candles or smoking materials.

LISTEN for the sound of the smoke alarm. Because seconds make a difference during a fire, be sure each level of the building has smoke detectors and test detectors each month.

LEARN two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. Also, designate an outside meeting place away from the home to meet.

For decades, Spahn & Rose has supported local fire departments. For example, when the Dyersville Spahn & Rose location celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017 with a lunch and raffle, proceeds benefited the Dyersville Fire Department. The volunteer fire department used the donations to purchase equipment needed for grain rescue operations. Also, this past year, Spahn & Rose donated the Stockton Fire Department.
