QUICK-THINKING MERKEL HELPS SAVE COWORKER

It was midmorning on January 8 at the Jesup, Iowa, Spahn & Rose location, and part-time driver Randy Merkel was finishing his typical Wednesday shift. Instead of clocking out, though, he strolled through the lumberyard to see if any coworkers needed a hand.

At the back of the yard, Merkel saw Mike Johnson, a Material Hander, on a flatbed truck loading building supplies. Merkel asked if he could help, but Johnson said he didn’t need assistance. Then, as Merkel was about to leave for the day, he saw Johnson fall.

Merkel rushed over. Finding Johnson unresponsive, Merkel immediately called 911 and ran off to find the store’s General Manager, Dave Sabers.

Fortunately, two EMTs who happened to be near the Jesup Spahn & Rose were tending to Johnson within minutes, performing CPR before an ambulance arrived.

“Randy is always smiling and does a good job,” Sabers says. “It’s really fortunate that Randy was there.”

Johnson is expected to make a full recovery.
