Bring in a sample. Paint matching begins with whatever you want to match. It could be a pillow, towels, drapes or a swatch of paint from another store. Digmann has even matched paint splattered on a rock. If you’re bringing in a paint chip to match, ideally it should be flat and at least the size of a quarter.
Consult with a Spahn & Rose paint expert . . . There’s more to mixing and matching than simply stirring a can of paint. In addition to talking about paint shades and matching, a Spahn & Rose expert can help guide your choice based on woodwork and whatever furniture will be near the surface you’re painting.
. . . or use our in-store paint-matching deck. Spahn & Rose stores that offer paint matching have swatches of color that enable you to compare and choose the shade that best matches your needs. If you bring in paint swatches from other stores, Spahn & Rose paint experts can enter their color numbers into our paint-matching computer to get an exact pairing. Those in-store swatches are likely a better option than using a page from a magazine page, Digmann says, because when scanned, the sheen on the surface of a magazine can distort the hue and not render the precise color you’re looking for.
Share your room lighting. The lighting in the space you’ll be painting will help determine the shade of paint and the best finish. For example, fluorescent lighting can make colors seem more harsh. And if sunlight regularly splashes across your walls, your Spahn & Rose expert can suggest paint options that won’t fade.
Review your paint’s finish options. When you are selecting paint, Spahn & Rose experts will talk with you about where you plan to paint and suggest options for sheen. For example, if you’re painting a low-traffic living room, an eggshell finish might be best. However, for high-traffic areas such as the kitchen, a satin finish would likely be a better choice. To avoid chipping and increase cabinets’ durability, meanwhile, Digmann often suggests 100 percent acrylic.
