It was one of those early August days when the temperatures neared 90 degrees but the humidity made you sweat before you’d done even a lick of work. That day, Doug White, a Spahn & Rose driver based in the Dubuque location, rolled up to a job site with a drywall delivery. For the next few hours, White unloaded drywall into the un-air-conditioned construction site, putting the sheetrock exactly where the contractor needed it.
During another recent job, White had to move dozens of sheets of drywall, one sheet at a time, up a narrow stairwell, navigating as though he were playing a life-size game of Tetris. He started at 7 in the morning and didn’t finish until more than 12 hours later.
“We have to have great customer service, especially right now,” says White, who has been a Spahn & Rose driver for the past nine years. “Having a happy customer is the most important job.”
For both his deep commitment to customer service, and for garnering a number of customer and coworker compliments, White has received the June Above & Beyond Award.
“It’s so important to have employees like Doug on the team,” says John Cook, General Manager of the Dubuque Spahn & Rose. “Our drivers are an extension of our sales staff, and having the kind of approachable, friendly attitude that Doug does benefits customers and coworkers. His willingness to help out with a smile is priceless.”
White says his favorite part of the job is spending time with customers on job sites. “I enjoy getting my hands dirty and working outside,” he adds. “I like working alongside customers and contractors, making sure they’re happy. Customer service is very personal to me, and I take a lot of pride in it.”
In his downtime, White relaxes by putting miles on his spin bike. “I put on my headphones and watch sports and movies,” he says. “It clears my mind. I try to put in 10 to 11 miles every night.”
White and other recipients of the monthly Above & Beyond Award receive a $100 Visa gift card and are eligible to be named the company’s Employee of the Year, which includes a $1,000 prize.
