Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity Builds Community with Waverly Spahn & Rose Store

When Nick Cole, an Outside Salesman for the Waverly Spahn & Rose location, talks about his store’s work with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity, he gets a little choked up.

“Working with Habitat for Humanity is awesome,” says Cole, who has been a Spahn & Rose employee for three years. “Every home we finish, there’s a dedication. At this last one, a mom had lost her daughter and was trying to put her life back together with her son. To see her able to start her life in a brand-new home is beyond rewarding.”

Cole has worked with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity as long as he’s been with Spahn & Rose. When the nonprofit group begins a home build, Cole will examine the blueprints and help create a materials list and provide advice. Then the Waverly Spahn & Rose provides at-cost materials for the project. So far, Cole and the store have helped build four homes in the Waverly area.

“We’re providing good homes for people who are trying to make it,” Cole says. “These are good working people doing the right thing. I really enjoy seeing people who deserve to have a chance get a chance.”

Typical Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity homes built in the Waverly area are about 1,600 square feet, with three bedrooms and a bathroom. The organization will break ground on another home build in the middle of July.

“It means everything to me that Spahn & Rose supports causes like Habitat for Humanity,” Cole says. “Habitat provides something to these deserving people that they wouldn’t have otherwise had.”
